How to Choose Ashes Keepsakes – All you need to know

What are ashes in glass keepsakes?

The loss of a loved one is a difficult and emotional experience for anyone to go through. The memories we have of those we’ve lost are precious, and we often seek out ways to keep their memory alive. One way to do this is through keepsakes, which are objects that hold special meaning and memories associated with our loved ones. They serve as tangible reminders of the moments we shared with our loved ones and can provide comfort and solace during times of grief.

Ashes in glass, also known as cremation or memorial glass, is a unique and meaningful way to remember a loved one or pet who has passed away. The process involves taking a small amount of ashes, usually less than a teaspoon, and fusing them into molten glass to create a one-of-a-kind piece of art. Ashes art offers a unique form of comfort and connection that can be cherished for many years to come.

We can pass down these special items and the stories behind them, ensuring that our loved ones are never forgotten, and their memory is kept alive for years to come.

Ashes keepsakes can play an important role in helping us cope with the loss of a loved one. They serve as physical reminders of the love and memories we shared and allow us to hold onto these precious moments forever. Ashes in glass keepsakes are a beautiful and unique way to honour and remember our loved ones.

How are ashes keepsakes made?

Ashes to glass keepsakes are made by fusing the cremated remains of a loved one within molten glass.

To make ashes in fused glass, I mix the ashes with a small amount of glass frit. (Frit is crushed glass, there are different grades from powder to coarse). I use fine and medium frit in my keepsake pieces. Frit helps to bind the ashes together and prevent them from floating to the surface of the molten glass.

Once the ashes are prepared, they are then placed on a piece of glass. A second piece of glass, or frit, is then placed on top of the ashes. The glass is then fused together in my kiln. The kiln is heated to around 800 degrees Celsius, which melts the glass and fuses the ashes into the glass.

The fusing process takes several hours, depending on the size of the piece of glass and the temperature of the kiln. Once the fusing process is complete, the glass is annealed, cooled and then finished. The finished piece of glass can then be used as a keepsake or displayed as a piece of art. My ashes keepsakes usually undergo at least 2 firings in the kiln.

Why glass and not resin? (This bit is long!)

I’ll start by saying there are some amazing resin artists out there, I know a couple and what they do is absolutely beautiful with no problems with longevity. Unfortunately, they are very few and far between so it is important to do your research.

There are many reasons why glass is a better choice than resin for ashes keepsakes. First of all, glass is a much more durable material. It won’t scratch or fade as easily as resin, and it’s also less likely to chip or break. Glass is also a very beautiful material, and it can be worked into any number of shapes and designs. When it comes to ashes keepsakes, glass gives a wide range of options in terms of both style and function.

Resin is quite versatile in that most things can be added and preserved. The problem is, not everyone who does it can do it to a high standard. There has been huge increase of resin makers in recent years, many of whom do not use the correct equipment, correct resin for the product and lots don’t use personal protective equipment putting their health at risk – if they’re not doing the basics, what else are they skipping and how are they treating your loved ones precious ashes?

Many people start out and haven’t tested their products for longevity. I’ve seen a lot of very upset people in various groups on Facebook, because their precious keepsake has yellowed or faded, cracked, chipped, or looks good on receipt but a few months down the line it looks awful. If you are going to be buying anything involving ashes, please do your research – type their name into google or Facebook, research the results, look at their reviews, ask them as many questions as you need – anyone reputable will be happy to put your mind at ease. And never, ever pay via Friends & Family on PayPal (this goes for buying any type of goods) – you are not protected if anything goes wrong!

Onto glass.

Obviously, I’m bias as I’m a glass artist! But there are some important distinctions between resin and glass, and I believe it’s better to be informed and have all the facts so you can make your decision.

Resin can be affected by perfume, hand sanitiser, shower gel etc – it can dull and/or wear it away and it can lose its shine or colour if you don’t take good care of it.  Glass colours will never fade or dull. You can scratch glass, but it is hard wearing and won’t be affected by UV light, weather, perfume etc.

UV light exposure is the most common cause of yellowing of resin, with sunlight being the biggest problem. This yellowing is a result of a chemical reaction in the resin called photodegradation, which occurs when the polymer chains in the resin break down under UV light exposure. This can cause the resin to become discoloured and yellowish in appearance, which can be particularly noticeable in clear or lightly coloured resin.

The degree to which resin yellows over time will depend on several factors, including the specific type of resin, the thickness of the resin, the amount of UV exposure, and the conditions under which the resin is stored. In general, high-quality resins and those with added UV stabilizers are less likely to yellow, but some degree of yellowing may be inevitable over long periods of time.

To minimize yellowing, it is important to store resin in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and to limit exposure to UV light as much as possible. Additionally, some resin products may include additives or coatings that can help to reduce yellowing over time.

Continuous exposure to high temperatures or placing your keepsake too close to a heat source can cause discoloration in epoxy resin.

Many epoxy resin products on the market are sold as adhesives and most are intended for industrial use, not home/studio use.

Because glass is a more natural material, it tends to give a smooth, clear and bright finish that beautifully sparkles in the light, whereas resin can look duller and feel rougher – depending on the type of materials used. Resin also tends to feel lighter and less substantial than glass.

Typically, there’s more skill involved when crafting cremation glass keepsakes, as the process involves heating the glass to extremely high temperatures before manipulating it into a particular design – it requires a lot of time and attention to detail to get the process right, resulting in a high quality product.

Because the process for creating resin is easier and less time-consuming, with the materials themselves often less expensive, it can be significantly cheaper than cremation glass keepsakes – which really works in its favour if you’re on a budget.

If you’re investing in something as personal as an ashes keepsake, you’ll want to know it will stand the test of time so you can keep it close to you forever. This is particularly important if you’re going to scatter the rest of your loved one’s ashes, as you might not be able to buy a replacement.

When it comes to durability, glass once again wins, as resin is typically more prone to scratches and dulling than high quality cremation glass. That being said, glass is not completely infallible either, but as long as you care for your glass keepsake, it should last for many years to come.

You will see lots of claims by resin companies extolling the virtue of resin over glass, pointing out many downsides to glass which just aren’t true.

Ashes can be incorporated into most glass art. If you’re not a wearer of jewellery or prefer something more arty, glass keepsakes are the ideal choice.

Ultimately, the choice between ashes in glass and ashes in resin will depend on personal preference and the intended use of the piece. Both options can provide a beautiful and meaningful way to honour and remember a loved one.

How to choose the right ashes in glass keepsake

There are many factors to consider when choosing the right ashes in glass keepsake. Here are a few tips:

Consider the loved one’s personality and interests. What were they passionate about? What did they enjoy doing? Choosing a keepsake that reflects their personality and interests will make it more meaningful.

Think about the size and shape of the keepsake. Where do you plan to display it? If you plan to wear it, make sure it is the right size for you.

Consider the cost of the keepsake. Ashes in glass keepsakes can vary in price. It is important to set a budget before you start shopping.

Do your research. There are many different artists and companies that create ashes in glass keepsakes. It is important to do your research and find a reputable artist or company that uses high-quality materials and creates beautiful keepsakes. Read reviews to ensure that the artist or company you choose has a track record of producing high-quality work and providing excellent customer service.

Don’t feel pressured to buy the first keepsake you see. Take your time and find a keepsake that you love and that you will cherish for years to come.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you are having trouble choosing a keepsake, don’t be afraid to ask for help from a friend, family member, or funeral director. They can offer you guidance and support as you make this important decision.

Remember, there is no right or wrong answer. The most important thing is to choose a keepsake that feels right for you and for your loved one.

The cost of ashes in glass keepsakes

The cost of ashes in glass keepsakes can vary depending on the size, shape, and complexity of the keepsake. My prices start from £45.

It’s important to keep in mind that ashes in glass keepsakes are handmade and often require specialised skills and equipment, which contributes to the cost. Additionally, the materials used in the creation process, such as high-quality glass, and the number of firings it will take in the kiln also impacts the final price.

When considering the cost of an ashes in glass keepsake, it’s important to remember that this is a unique and personal item that will last a lifetime. While the cost may seem high, the value of having a tangible reminder of your loved one’s memory can be priceless.

The care and maintenance of ashes in glass keepsakes

Ashes in glass keepsakes are beautiful and meaningful ways to honour and remember loved ones, but like any cherished possession, they require proper care and maintenance to ensure their longevity. Here are some tips on how to care for and maintain your ashes in glass keepsake:

  • Handle with care: Glass is fragile and can break easily, so it’s important to handle your ashes in glass keepsake with care. Avoid dropping or hitting the piece against hard surfaces and store it in a safe place where it won’t be accidentally knocked over or damaged.
  • Clean gently: Use a soft cloth to clean your keepsake and avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that can scratch or damage the glass. If necessary, you can use a small amount of mild soap and water to clean the piece but be sure to rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures: Glass can be sensitive to extreme temperatures, so avoid exposing your glass keepsake to extreme changeable temperatures. This can cause the glass to expand or contract, which can lead to cracking or other damage.

By following these simple care and maintenance tips, you can ensure that your ashes in glass keepsake remains a beautiful and cherished reminder of your loved one for years to come.
